Nyingchi Overview

Kunming is the capital of Yunnan Province, is the political, economic and cultural center and also the transport and communication hub of the province. Kunming has no bitter cold in winter and heat in summer with blossoms opening all the year round. Hence it has enjoyed the reputation of the 'Spring City'. With a history more than 2,400 years, it owns its importance to the fact that is was the gateway to the well-known South Silk Road that facilitated trade with Tibet, Sichuan, Myanmar and India.

The Chengdu-Kunming Railway and the Guiyang-Kunming Electric Railway link Yunan to the national railway network. An across-province highway network, with Kunming as the center and national and provincial highways as the framework, has been formed in the province. The highways linking its major cities are all high-ranked. Its main watercourses are the Jinsha River and the Lancang-Mekong River, and its key ports include the Jinghong Port, Simao Port, Dali Port, Shuifu Port and Suijiang Port.

Population: Nyingchi has a population of 159,200, which includes many ethnic groups and Tibetan is its main body.

Administrative Division: The two counties of Zayü and Mêdog are considered by the Chinese government to be Tibetan territory and thus under Chinese jurisdiction, however they are de facto under control by India and make up large swathes of the Indian state of Arunachal Pradesh.

The prefecture contains the Namjagbarwa Peak, and the Yarlung Zangbo Great Canyon, located in Medog County, which attracts significant tourism and geoscientific and biological study to the area.

Nyingchi is situated at the north bank of Yarlung Zangbo River, lower reaches of Niyang River, at the southeast part of Tibet. The terrain here is dangerously steep with river valleys. The average altitude is 3000 m with relative height difference of 2200 – 4700 m. Nyingchi is the prefecture with lowest altitude in Tibet. Niyang River slowly flows though the county surrounded by mountains. There is abundant rainfall and the climate here is very comfortable. The mountains here are extending from east to west, higher altitude in north and lower in south, which has great height difference. The climate here is complicate with great vertical changes, forming coexistent variety of climatic zone: tropical climate, subtropical climate, temperate climate, boreal climate, humid climate and semi-humid climate. The annual precipitation of Nyingchi is around 650 mm, annual temperature is 8.7℃, with annual sunlight 2000 hrs and 180 frost-free days. It boasts fertile lands and rich resources. The average temperature of winter in Nyingchi is above 0℃, while summer’s average temperature is 16℃. The four seasons here are distinctive, and the summer is not so hot and winter is not so cold. But every May to Sep. is the rainy season. Lots of rainfall is easy to cause landslide, debris flow, collapse and other natural disasters.

Best time to visit Nyingchi

The best time to visit Nyingchi is Sep. to Oct. each year. Every May to Sep. is the rainy season. Lots of rainfall is easy to cause landslide, debris flow, collapse and other natural disasters. Rainy season is not the good choice especial while travel from Sichuan-Tibet Highway.

Try to plan your Nyingchi tour to avoid the peak holidays. Because they are popular with Chinese tourists, Nyingchi attractions become more crowded in these periods.

The most crowded seasons in China are Chinese Spring Festival (usually in late Jan or early Feb.), International Labor Day (May 01 to 03) and National Day (Oct 01-07). Spring Festival and the National Day golden week are the most crowded time for travelling.
