Mount Wutai to Launch Environmental Improvement Project

From April local government of Mount Wutai will launch a project to improve environmental conditions. Mount Wutai is regarded as one of The Four Sacred Buddhist Mountains in China.

The project aims to improve the environmental condition in the temple-dotted Taihuai town, center of Mount Wutai's scenic area in North China's Shanxi Province.

To decrease air pollution the local government plans to lay pipelines and restore gas-holder stations. 12 new mobile public toilets will be newly built in the scenic area. Besides, afforestation will be started as a big part of the project. A 22-km-long green belt will be completed by the end of July. In addition, local government will continue providing subsidies to encourage the use of anthracite instead of bituminous coal.

Added to UNESCO's World Heritage List in 2009, Mount Wutai is the home of about 50 Buddhist temples built between the 1st century AD and the early 20th century. The site is in Wutai County, 230 km from Taiyuan, the capital city of Shanxi Province.
