Haikou Overview

Haikou is the capital city of Hainan Province, China’s second largest island, is the center of politics, economy, and culture, as well as a newly-constructed International port city. As the capital city, Haikou enjoys the convenient transportation. Hence, it is usually served as the first stop for the visitors coming to Hainan Province. The typical sight f the city are the lined coconut trees along the street and the colorful neon light shining at the dark blue sky at night. The city has the excellent environment labeled by its sunshine, sands, seawater, green color and the fresh air as well as the tropical landscape, so it is nicknamed the ‘city of coconut'.

The attractive cultural spots, tropical virgin forests, rare species of plants, plenty of tropical fruits, abundant aquatic resources, and unique folk customs here are worth seeing.

Hannan Province has been a rapid development in transportation with a complete network on land, air, and sea. At present, Hainan Province has two International airports: Meilan International Airport in Haikou and the Phoenix International Airport in Sanya. Meilan Airport is 27 km from the downtown Haikou city and the Phoenix is 14 km from the downtown Sanya city. Highways offer convenience for transportation on the Island. As to the water transportation, it has played an important role in transportation. Among the dozens of harbors and wharves, Haikou and Sanya are the largest. With the coming of Yuehai Railway, the trains from the mainland can go directly to the island.

Area: Haikou has an area of 2,305 square kilometers.

Geography: The city is located on the southern bank of the Qiongzhou Strait, facing the mainland's Leizhou Peninsula. Built on a mound of the coast, it is the biggest city in Hainan Province.

Population: Haikou has a population of 0.54 million.

Administrative Division: There are four subdivisions in Haikou which are Longhua District, Xiuyintg District, Qiongshan District and Meilan District.

Hainan is the second largest island off the Chinese mainland, the largest being Taiwan. Hainan is the more southerly of the two and is nearer to the mainland, separated only by narrow straights. Hainan has a tropical moist monsoonal climate. Its annual temperature variation is less than 15 degrees Celsius.

The provincial capital city of Haikou is on the northern edge of the torrid zone, and is part of the monsoon tropical zone. Haikou’s Spring is warm with almost drought conditions, but the high temperatures in Summer bring heavy rain in their wake.  As high temperatures warm the waters of the South China Sea from June to September tropical storms, known here as typhoons, are driven toward the coast and Haikou can experience force 8 storms that cause considerable problems for traffic. It can feel quite cold in Winter by contrast.  Annual Average temperature is 17-23°C.

As a rule, the best time to travel here is between November and the following April.
