Haikou is the capital city of Hainan Province, China’s second largest island, is the center of politics, economy, and culture, as well as a newly-constructed International port city. As the capital city, Haikou enjoys the convenient transportation. Hence, it is usually served as the first stop for the visitors coming to Hainan Province. As to the water transportation, it has played an important role in transportation. Among the dozens of harbors and wharves, Haikou and Sanya are the largest. With the coming of Yuehai Railway, the trains from the mainland can go directly to the island.

Geography: The city is located on the southern bank of the Qiongzhou Strait, facing the mainland's Leizhou Peninsula. Built on a mound of the coast, it is the biggest city in Hainan Province.

As high temperatures warm the waters of the South China Sea from June to September tropical storms, known here as typhoons, are driven toward the coast and Haikou can experience force 8 storms that cause considerable problems for traffic.
